NEWS CENTER - Commenting on the fact that a government has yet to be formed in South Kurdistan following the elections, activist Zulfan Xerîb Rahim stated that parliament cannot function properly and said, "The YNK and PDK must unite and develop a strategy. Unity will have a positive impact on all segments."
South Kurdistan held parliamentary elections on October 20, 2024, with a 76 percent participation rate. According to the election results, the KDP had the upper hand in Hewlêr and Duhok, while the YNK received the most votes in Silêmanî and Helebce. The New Generation Movement came in third in all four regions.
However, almost a year later, the government still has not been formed. The failure to form a government deepens the chaos and crises, and the public criticizes the authorities for failing to take any steps in this regard.
JINNEWS spoke with activist Zulfan Xerîb Rahim about the issue.
Zulfan Xerîb Rahim began her speech by referencing developments in the Middle East, stating that developments in Iraq also affect Kurdistan. She continued, "Every development in Iraq has a great impact on the entire Middle East, including the other parts of Kurdistan. Iraq is a diverse region. Therefore, Kurdistan has a special responsibility for this region." A year after the elections, a government has still not been formed. Without a government, parliament cannot continue its active work. There are also some disruptions in terms of services."
Unity of the YNK and the PDK
Zulfan Xerîb Rahim emphasized the importance of unity in Southern Kurdistan following the elections, stating, "With unity, they will be stronger in parliament. The Kurds' strength in the south will also contribute to strengthening the other regions. Therefore, unity must be achieved, and everyone must do their part. The YNK and the PDK need to unite and develop a strategy. Unity will have a positive impact on all segments."
Pressure must be exerted on the Baghdad government'
Zulfan Xerîb Rahim emphasized that political parties should respond to the government's failure to form and said: "The fact that the government has not been formed since the elections has led to political crises. At the same time, voices should be raised against the economic crisis in the south. The southern administration should put pressure on the Baghdad government. If the government has not been formed by today, the south and the Baghdad government are responsible. They are also responsible for the crises."
Emphasis on unity
Stating that both domestic and international powers should intervene in the crisis, Zulfan Xerîb Rahim said: "It is essential that the people and politicians unite against the situation. Any development will concern not only the South and Iraq, but also the entire Middle East. I hope that any development in the South will be in favor of the Kurdish people. The Kurdish people, who have been denied for thousands of years, will continue their lives with their own status."
