AMED - Speaking about the Gurbetelli Ersöz Women Journalism Awards, which will be organised for the first time this year, MKG President Roza Metina drew attention to the importance of the competition and said, ‘I think this collective will be an example for women journalists around the world.’

The Mesopotamia Women Journalists Association (MKG) will organise the 1st Gurbetelli Ersöz Women Journalism Awards. In the announcement made for the Gurbetelli Ersöz Women Journalism Awards, the applications for which started on 17 June and will end on 20 September, it was stated: ‘If you want to be in the place where the pencils that put their struggle into the lines of news, where the pens that wear the truth turn into the fire of freedom, this call is for you.’ Applications, which started on 17 June, will end on 28 September.

MKG President Roza Metina evaluated the purpose and content of the contest and invited all women journalists to participate in the contest.

'Women journalists called us and said, ‘We are excited’'

Roza Metina first shared the purpose of the competition they organised. Roza Metina said, "Journalism is a very important profession that has an impact on society. This profession has the feature of raising public awareness. We are organising this competition in order to promote and encourage this profession. I think that the 1st Gurbetelli Ersöz Women Journalism Awards competition is very important for the importance and purpose of journalism to come to the fore and for women to do a freer journalism in the fields. When we announced this competition, many women journalists called us, asked questions about the competition and said, “We are very excited”. This made us very happy. While expressing their excitement, women said, “We will also participate in the competition with our news and photographs”. In this sense, we have organised a competition to highlight the professional efforts of women journalists."

Journalists can participate in the competition in 5 fields

Roza Metina emphasised why it is important to participate in this competition and gave information about the details of the competition. Roza Metina said, "Another aim of the Gurbetelli Women Journalists contest is to organise the contest in memory of those who lost their lives while struggling in the field of press. As you know, Gurbetelli Ersöz is the first woman Editor-in-Chief in Turkey. She left us a very meaningful value, and we have organised this contest to protect her legacy. The applications, which started on 17 June, will end on 28 September. In this sense, we have shared our announcements on MKG's digital page in both Kurdish and Turkish. Women can participate in this contest in 4 areas, these areas are Kurdish news, Turkish news, photography, video-video."

'It will be an example for women journalists around the world'

Roza Metina underlined that the contest is very important for the unity of women journalists and made the following call "Such competitions are important for women journalists to emphasise their beliefs against the male-dominated system and to respond to attacks. Journalists face many difficulties both in the 4 regions of Kurdistan and in Turkey. In this sense, the contest is also important in terms of responding to systematic attacks. I believe that this response will spread and that women journalists will respond to this contest with great ownership. We want all women journalists to focus on this contest. If women participate in this contest and strengthen each other, their organisation will also intensify. There is an important and difficult process, so we think that the spirit of unity is important, in that sense this contest is important. This contest was prepared collectively, journalists came together and organised this contest. I think that this collective will have positive effects. I also think that this collective will be an example for women journalists around the world. Therefore, all women journalists should embrace this contest.
