The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) made a statement regarding the health problems that may occur after the Mereş-centered earthquakes. In the statement, warnings were made about the spread of infectious diseases.

 

The statement noted that the spread of infectious diseases should be "a cause for concern" in two to four weeks, adding that it "has the potential to cause epidemics, especially when survivors are moved to temporary shelters."

While it was stated that these infections can be transmitted through water and food, it was noted that hepatitis A, norovirus and rotaviruses can be transmitted.

 

Cholera warning

 

The statement also emphasized that an increase in cholera cases in the earthquake-affected areas is an important possibility in the coming weeks. The potentially deadly cholera epidemic has already existed in Syria for months due to water access issues.

 

Infection risk

 

On the other hand, as these regions are in the middle of winter and temperatures are low, the risk of respiratory infection outbreaks is "concerned". This risk "will increase as survivors move to camps where overcrowding cannot be avoided," it said.

 

In the statement, which is also concerned about the spread of Covid-19, flu and other respiratory viruses, it was noted that if it turns into an epidemic, "There will be additional pressure for the already damaged health system." However, there are also concerns about outbreaks of measles, chickenpox, meningitis or polio.
