IZMIR - Reacting to the detention of many people, including the Peace Mother Şükriye Kızıldağ, during the house raids in Izmir and Manisa, the politician women said that the main aim is to prevent the voices of the prisoners from being heard.
A raid was carried out on the Aegean Association of Families of Detainees and Convicts (EGE TUHAYDER), the Association of Persons Who Lost Their Relatives (ANYAKAYDER) Izmir Branch and the Izmir Religious People’s Solidarity Association (IDAYDER) yesterday morning. During the raids in Manisa and Izmir, 16 people, including the 70-year-old Mother Peace Şükriye Kızıldağ, were detained.
Reacting to the detentions, the women said that it is desired to prevent the rights violations in prisons from being heard.
‘Are they afraid from our mothers?’
Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Turgutlu District Co-chair Naile Gümüştaş showed her reaction to the detentions with these words: ‘’Are they afraid from our mothers? If they had given the time of the statement, they would go for testify. They think they will intimidate with raids on families and houses. However, we are not going anywhere. If we had known, we could have given our statement and came. We do not know under what circumstances they took the mother. We couldn't see her because there was a restriction decision. If we see her, we'll deliver her medicines. It is unclear how many days she will remain in detention. There is no point in putting a 70-year-old woman in prison. She has sickness. It is not too late to release her immediately. It’s enough! Women’s institutions should also raise their voice against this situation.’’
‘Detentions are intimidation to women’
Free Women’s Movement (TJA) activist Hayat İzgi, who noted that women are wanted to be intimidated through detentions, said: ‘’They are taking a 70-year-old mother into custody. She is also in our institutions. These institutions do not open without anyone’s knowledge. According to the statute, it is opened legally. But the state wants to carry its power over women. They do not want the woman to be conscious, because the conscious woman is a conscious society. They want to silence the society through women. They terrorize women in politics. Our women have been fighting on the streets for 40 years and will continue to do so. Whatever happens, it is our call to women and mothers, let’s protect the identity of women and the struggle, because it is better for women to be on the street.
‘The aim is to ensure that the practices in prison are not heard’
Leyla Kaygısız from the EGE TUHAYDER management said the following about the detentions: ‘’The attack on our association’s executives and former executives aims to cut off the prisoners’ communication with their families and the public and legitimize the attacks. They are trying to silence those who try to be the voice of the prisoners. But even if we are only one person, we will continue to be the voice of the friends in the prison.’’
‘Everyone should speak up’
Leyla finally said: ‘’Everyone who says they are human should speak up against attacks, violence and oppressions. Everyone needs to stand together against inhumane acts. I call on everyone who has a conscience, not necessarily the family of the detainee, to give a voice to the voices of those in prison.’’
