500 women become members of Women’s Trade Union in Southern Kurdistan

NEWS CENTER - The first Women’s Trade Union in Iraq and Southern Kurdistan has begun its works with its 500 women members.
 
The first Women’s Trade Union in Iraq and Southern Kurdistan has begun its works. According to Rojnews, the Women’s Trade Union founded on March 8, 2018 in Hewlêr (Erbil) has been welcomed by women with great interest since its foundation. The Women’s Trade Union is the first women’s trade union in Iraq and Southern Kurdistan and shortly after its foundation, 500 women applied to become members of the union.
 
The administration of the union consists of Assyrian women, women of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (Yeketî Niştîmanî Kurdistan- YNK) and the Communist Party. Şadye Ebdilwahîd, chairperson of the Women’s Trade Union Commission, explained that women's union is very important for the resolution of the problems women face in workplaces and the protection of their rights. Saying that they have taken this step to defend women’s rights and to provide the women to take part in the union, Şadye continued to speak as follows; “The union has aroused great interest since its foundation.”
 
‘Women show great interest in the union’
 
Stating that the women coming from outside of Southern Kurdistan have serious problems in their workplaces, Şadye said, “The women came here to work for companies. But the women faced problems because the jobs given by companies had short time or the companies were closed. Now, the women coming here to work become members of our union and they begin to work more comfortably. The number of foreign women working in the Kurdistan Region is uncertain yet. Our works on this are still going on.”
