Journalist Berivan Altan sentenced to 1 year 3 months in prison

MERSİN – Berivan Altan, reporter of Dicle News Agency (DİHA) closed down by emergency decree, has been sentenced to one year and three months in prison for allegedly “propagandizing for a (terrorist) organization”. The court has suspended the jail sentence.
 
Berivan Altan, reporter of Dicle News Agency (DİHA) closed down by an emergency decree, was taken into custody in Mersin province August 11. First hearing of the case opened against Berivan Altan for allegedly “propagandizing for a (terrorist) organization” was held by Mersin 9th High Criminal Court. Journalist Berivan attended the hearing.
 
The indictment was read after the identification. The news written On May 25 and July 12, 2016 by Berivan and a music video shared by her on social media were shown as criminal evidences in the indictment.
 
In her defense, Berivan said she was tried for her journalistic activities and her journalistic activities couldn’t be shown as “propagandizing for a (terrorist) organization” and she demanded to be acquitted.
 
The court has sentenced Berivan to one year and three months in prison for allegedly “propagandizing for a (terrorist) organization” and the court has suspended the jail sentence.
