Democratic Women's Association (DKD) was founded on December 3, 1987 by women mostly from socialist movements. On October, 1989, the women published “Our voice” magazine as media organ of the association. The DKD was closed down on May, 1992. Women from socialist groups having different perspectives on women's issues, despite these different perspectives, were able to make women's politics within the DKD, as well as being able to make or not to make women's politics jointly with other women's groups, and they had the feature of being the story of affiliation and non- affiliation with the rising feminist movement at that time.

Some of DKD’s socialist women called themselves as feminist. Feminists carried out their activities under the umbrella of the DKD left the association in the middle of 1989 due to discusses on “independent women's organization”. Gülfer Akkaya wrote the history of the DKD in a book named "Unutulmasın diye… Demokratik Kadın Derneği" (Democratic Women’s Association… To be not forgotten).
