Protests against draft bill giving muftis to perform marriages continue

ISTANBUL – The women gathered upon the call of the Beylikdüzü Women’s Platform and protested the draft bill giving muftis to perform marriages accepted by the Interior Affairs Commission of the Turkish Grand National Assembly. “These laws cannot be passed like this,” said the women.    

Women continued their actions against the draft bills giving muftis or religious official authorities to perform marriages and encouraging violence against women in Beylikdüzü, Istanbul. The women gathered in the Park of Liberty located in Beylikdüzü district of Istanbul against the draft bill upon the call of the Beylikdüzü Women's Platform and they said they wouldn’t stay silent, they wouldn’t be scared, and they wouldn’t obey.

The women made a statement on behalf of the platform, and they stated in the statement that women should have the right to comment on the issues affecting the future of women. Women stating that their gained rights in the Civil Law cannot be seized and they noted: "These laws mixing social service and religion cannot be passed like this. We will continue to speak out in the streets for an equal and free life.”
