6 years 8 months prison sentence to Nevriye Çur

DİYARBAKIR - Yenişehir Deputy Co-Mayor and TJA activist Nevriye Çur was sentenced to six years and eight months in prison for allegedly committing the crimes of ‘’being a member of a terrorist organization’’ and opposing the Law No. 2911.
 
The 9th hearing of Nevriye Çur, Deputy Co-Mayor of Yenişehir and Free Women’s Movement (TJA) activist, who was tried within the scope of the Rosa Women’s Association investigation and by combining two of her previous files, was held at the Diyarbakır 10th High Criminal Court. Nevriye, who was tried without arrest, and her lawyer Şeyhmus Bayhan were present at the hearing.
 
Prosecution requested punishment
 
The prosecution claimed that Nevriye participated in the demonstration held in the HDP provincial building, the tape records obtained, the continuity, diversity and intensity of her actions, and her actions reached the level of a member of an organization and that she committed the crime of  ‘’being a member of a terrorist organization’’. The prosecution requested punishment for her.
 
Nevriye demanded her acquittal by stating that she did not agree with the opinion, did not accept the secret witness statements, and is not a member of the organization.
 
‘The actions of March 8 should not be a crime’
 
Lawyer Şeyhmus Bayhan said that they did not agree with the opinion, that his client was a member of HDP and it was very normal for her to attend the candidate publicity meeting. Şeyhmus demanded acquittal by saying: ‘’The client cannot be charged with a crime in this matter. She participated in some condolences due to her being a politician. Regardless of who the condolences are in the region, the condolences are attended. The actions on March 8 and November 25 should not constitute a crime. In the opinion, it was not specified for which action, activity and act she was demanded to be punished.’’
 
After a short break, the court decided that Nevriye was sentenced to six years and three months in prison for ‘’being a member of a terrorist organization’’ and five months prison sentence for allegedly committing the crime of opposing the Law No. 2911, and the continuation of the judicial review measure.
