DİYARBAKIR - Speaking about the pandemic and vaccination, SES Diyarbakır Branch Co-Chair Yıldız Ok Orak drew attention to the prisons and said: "Not vaccinating in prisons is a violation of rights."

 

The coronavirus (Covid-19), which started in Wuhan, China and affected the whole world, continues to spread. In Turkey, since the first cases were seen, 47,405 people died, according to the data announced by the Ministry of Health. However, institutions and organizations working in the field of health state that the number of deaths is much higher than the announced number.

Health and Social Workers’ Union (SES) Diyarbakır Branch Co-Chair Yıldız Ok Orak gave information about the epidemic and vaccination in Diyarbakır and made an assessment.

 

‘Rate of vaccination is very low in Turkey’

 

Stating that the measures taken by the government during the pandemic process were inconsistent, Yıldız pointed to the people who had to work in the restrictions imposed due to the pandemics. Stating that the bans did not benefit the society, Yıldız said: "In the latest curfews, 50 or 60 percent of the society had to be vaccinated. It was supposed to be so in the bans. However, this was not implemented in Turkey. The more people vaccinated during the prohibition period, the better. For the pandemic to end, 60 percent of the population needs to be vaccinated or have undergone the corona. Unfortunately, the rate of vaccination in Turkey is very low. If vaccination goes like this, it seems that the pandemic will not end in Turkey."

 

‘No vaccination in prisons is a violation of right’

 

Stating that the epidemic does not end with sitting at home, Yıldız noted that the vaccination rate should be increased and said: "We know very well that the 17-day full lockdown is for the tourism sector. It is not a coincidence that there were bans until June and then the bans were lifted. Tourism has become the only source of income for the country. There are many segments in risk group. Prisons are among these groups. But prisons are not vaccinated. This is a huge violation of rights. It will have very bad consequences. There is a decrease in cases across Diyarbakır. However, the rules set by the state are without substructure. In response, people should take their personal precautions."

 

‘It is wrong to say that I have been vaccinated and survived’

 

While emphasizing the need for the Ministry of Health to take precautions and vaccinate as soon as possible, Yıldız also warned: "It is wrong to say that I have been vaccinated and survived. Because if the person next to you has not been vaccinated, there is a re-infection situation. A call to the ministry to vaccinate all segments of the society. For now, Diyarbakır is in good situation, but we can say that bad days are waiting for us in the future. Last year, we experienced the highest case rate in Diyarbakır in the summer months."
