Freedom of press report for May: 70 women journalists subjected to violence

ANKARA - According to the May Press Freedom Report of the Coalition for Women in Journalism (CFWIJ), 70 women journalists were subjected to violence and harassment, while 19 people were detained.
 
The Coalition for Women in Journalism (CFWIJ) published the “May Freedom of the Press Report” in which it records the violations of rights, threats and attacks against women journalists, and harassment cases they have been subjected to. According to the report, 70 women journalists were subjected to violence, threats, or harassment in May 2021.
 
19 women journalists detained
 
The rights violations in the report, which states that a woman journalist lost her life while she was working in Gaza, are as follows:
 “* At least 18 women journalists were attacked/prevented in the field.
 
  * 19 more women journalists were detained.
 
  * While at least six journalists were subjected to physical violence, at least seven journalists were faced with threats of violence.
 
  * Seven people, including the Kurdish editor of Jin News, Roza Metina, and the editor of Etkin News Agency (ETHA), İsminaz Temel, and its reporter, Havva Cuştan, faced legal harassment.
  * Four female journalists, including Habertürk TV presenter Ebru Baki, had to face online harassment.
  * At least two women journalists were also verbally attacked.”
 
‘We continue to find hope’
 
After the rights violations published in the report, the note “But we continue to find hope as always” was shared.
On the other hand, it was stated in the report that the house arrest given to ETHA reporter Pınar Gayıp was lifted on May 18 and that journalist Melis Alphan was acquitted of all charges in the lawsuit filed against her.
