ANKARA - As a result of the applications made, the Council of State asked the Presidency for a defense regarding the termination of the Istanbul Convention.

It decided to withdraw from the Istanbul Convention, of which Turkey was the first signatory, on the night of March 20. President Tayyip Erdoğan based his withdrawal decision on Article 3 of Presidential Decree No. 9, which gives the power to ratify international conventions. After the President made this decision, many individuals and institutions applied to the Council of State.

The 10th Chamber of the Council of State, looking at the case, asked the Presidency for a defense before the decision to stay execution. The Council of State asked the reasons why the convention was canceled in terms of both procedural and essential aspects. Following the defense sent by the Presidency, the 10th Chamber of the Council of State will first decide on the stay of execution and then the cancellation request.
