Girls of Sulaymaniyah defend themselves

	SULAYMANIYAH - Girls aged 10 and 18 learn karate in Karate Club located in Seyidsadiq district of Sulaymaniyah city. The girls not only defend themselves with karate sport but also are preparing to represent their own region in competitions.

	‘We can even go to the Olympics’

	 

	Daban Osman, who has green belt, said they were happy to learn karate as girls.  Daban also said she had gone to halabja or Sulaymaniyah for years to learn karate because there wasn’t a karate club in Seyidsadıq district; “Last year, I joined the karate championship organized in Iraq on behalf of Sulaymaniyah team. But this year will be different; I will join it on behalf of my district. If we have necessary assistance, we can join the Olympics and world championships and get good results from them.”

	 

	They are waiting for support

	 

	Sozyar Rêbiwar has been engaged in karate for two years and she has orange belt. Sozdar stated that she likes doing karate and that she wants to improve herself in this field; “We are learning karate in Seyidsadıq. This is very good for us but not enough. We have training for a few hours a week. We want more support.”

	 

	Derya Ömer, who has yellow belt, said she was happy to spend her time doing sport after school. “We are trying to learn karate. Our teachers give their karate information to us. Everyone can come to learn karate,” said Derya.

	 

	A karate teacher Serbest Ebdulqadir said, “Girls get their training very successfully. We didn’t expect the girls to be engaged in this sport at first. But later many girls came to learn karate and they are more successful in karate. We have difficulty to form new teams because we have a narrow place.”
