Letter from the UK to Rojava: Urgent call for protection for the Kurdish people 2026-02-10 12:03:30   NEWS CENTER - More than 70 MPs and Lords from the UK's Labour Party to the Conservatives sent a letter to Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper stating that the Kurdish people in Rojava need urgent protection and calling on the government to take immediate action.   More than 70 figures, including MPs and Lords from political parties in England, Northern Ireland, Wales, and Scotland, sent a letter to UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper expressing their concerns and demands regarding the attacks on Rojava.   Signatories included the ruling Labour Party, the main opposition Conservative Party, the Liberal Democrats, Plaid Cymru from Wales, the Scottish National Party (SNP) from Scotland, the Green Party, the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), and Sinn Féin from Northern Ireland.   The letter sent to the Foreign Office stated, “We are writing to you as a cross-party group of MPs and Lords because we are concerned about the rapidly deteriorating security situation in northeastern Syria, where Kurdish communities face a real and imminent threat of violence.”   ‘The United Kingdom has an obligation to support the Kurds’   The letter stated that the Kurds are among the United Kingdom's strongest allies in the region and noted that the escalation was a sign of a return to the days when ISIS was rampant in Syria. The letter stated, “Given the extraordinary determination shown by the Kurds in defeating ISIS in Syria, the United Kingdom has an obligation to support the Syrian Kurds.” The letter emphasized that the developments cannot be dismissed with mere expressions of concern and calls for de-escalation. It stated that the United Kingdom must swiftly and decisively coordinate a response, working with regional and global partners, to protect the Kurdish people in Northeast Syria and provide a long-term, sustainable solution for the region.”   Members of Parliament and Lords listed their urgent demands to the government as follows:   “*Taking a clear stance against violence against civilians and supporting a long-term political solution in Syria that respects the rights of all minority groups;   *Evaluating the implementation of targeted sanctions against individuals and organizations responsible for violence against civilians;   *Intensifying diplomatic efforts with regional and global allies to prevent further military escalation and protect civilians;   *Providing adequate humanitarian aid to communities in northeastern Syria and ensuring that this aid is delivered safely.”   The letter concluded with a warning that violence could escalate further if the government did not act swiftly and decisively. While demanding a clear statement on the steps to be taken to prevent this process from worsening, it was emphasized that the United Kingdom owes a deep debt of gratitude to the Kurdish women and men who have resisted ISIS for many years. It was stated that concrete steps taken during this difficult period would be the minimum repayment of this debt.
